I stayed with a wonderful family in Eagle, Alaska who had been living there for 16 years. They had come from the Lower 48 in the United States and homesteaded, and raised a son. Living off the land by subsistence hunting of moose and caribou, salmon fishing, and collecting their own water (their home has no running water or heat source) was an eye-opening experience in this vast frontier. Eagle has a population of just 86 at last count, and sits on the Yukon River. It falls less than 2 degrees below the Arctic Circle, and when I visited mid-winter the days were short and cold, the temperature moving between -20 to -50 degrees F (-28C to -45C).
